The BBC has apologised for the new Doctor Who being mildly rude about ginger people. He transmogrified, or regenerated or whatever, and the first thing that Matt Smith said was: "I'm still not ginger." Now ginger parents are appalled because they reckon that this could lead to their ginger offspring getting bullied. "No, no!" says the Beeb. "But the Doctor is disappointed not to be ginger! It's not rude at all!" Not convinced. If he is disappointed not to be ginger, then that's only funny if you accept that this is an inherently amusing desire — and that's still gingerist. Or hairist. Or whatever.

Of course, the real story here is that, in .a whole week, this is the biggest thing that the BBC has to apologise for. Remember the glory days of Hutton? Misrepresenting the Queen? Faking a phone-in on Blue Peter? Rude messages on Andrew Sachs's answerphone? Alas, I, suspect that the golden age of BBC apologies has passed. We shall miss it.
