Doctor Who And The Paradise Of Death (Friday, R5, 6.30pm)

Marking Radio 5's third birthday today. as well as Doctor Who's 30th birthday in November, is the start of his first original adventure since BBC TV put him and the Tardis into cold storage at the end of the 1980s, It turns out to be unexpectedly good, reminiscent of the best of the television stories, with all the classic ingredients, including giant sabre-toothed dogs from the other side of the galaxy. It helps that Barry Letts, who has written all five episodes, produced Doctor Who during the Jon Pertwee era 20 years ago, and that Pertwee himself (his voice a touch gravelly these days) returns as the Time Lord Be warned, episode two is nastier and a touch sadistic.
