Book Week

Launceston Church Grammar School

Our Book Week celebrations this year centred on the theme Read across the universe. Children and staff dressed up in a variety of imaginative and creative costumes including a dalek, the Tardis, astronauts, aliens, Tashi, the Mad Hatter, superheroes and other interesting characters. A parade was held in the hall to show off the costumes to the whole school from Pre-school to Grade 6 and many parents who came along to see the variety of costumes. On the school stage we had an astronaut and Tardis and the parade was opened with the Dr Who theme.

We also had a sale of donated books during Book Week, which was a huge success. We raised an amazing $400, which we donated to The Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This organisation works with remote Indigenous communities and supplies books and literacy resources to women's centres, crèches, schools, libraries, safe houses and art centres. In 2013 The Foundation is working to provide books to over 200 remote communities in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Western New South Wales and Western Australia.

In library lessons children also viewed the shortlisted books for the CBCA awards and one of the favourites was Tom the outback mailman. Prep, and Grades 1 and 2 children looked at maps to see where Tom worked and we watched the old film clip from the 1950s about his life as a mailman.
