Scotish theatre actor Leonard Maguire, aged 73, has died at his home near Montauban, in France, to which he had retired in recent years.

Born in Glasgow, he joined the Citizens' Theatre Company as a founding member in its heyday during the mid-forties, working alongside well-known Scots like Duncan Macrae and Fulton Mackay. He later acted in repertory at Rugby and Harrogate.

For a time he looked likely to win continuing acclaim in London after winning a part alongside Vivien Leigh in Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth, then with John Gielgud in Crime and Punishment, and with Edith Evans in Tyrone Guthrie's production of The Rivals. But the London life was not for him. Never one to court personal publicity - he once failed to keep an appointment when this writer went to interview him - he returned from doing fine work in the West End to various key theatres in the provinces and also, of course, to his native Scotland, where he was in the noteworthy 1951 Edinburgh Festival production of Ane Satyre of the Three Estaites.

Not so well known is that he kept busy in radio, working in hundreds of programmes, both drama and documentary. He was also seen in character parts in popular television dramas like Casualty, [[broadwcast:Full Circle|Doctor Who]] and EastEnders.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Campbell, a former radio producer, and by a son and two daughters.
