THE RETURN of the Daleks to the BBC is a remarkable turn of events. After all, the BBC's new chairman, Michael Grade, once boasted that his greatest achievement as BBC1 Controller was their demise. "When I was at the BBC, I was the man who took Dr Who off the air," he told a fringe meeting at the Lib Dems' annual conference in 1985. "After Star Wars and Spielberg, it is not credible science fiction to have those things crashing around the studio." His comments were greeted with boos and hisses all around. Despite being unkindly dubbed a dalek himself, former Director-General John flirt failed to bring them back during the 1990s.
