POLICE BOX MUST STAY SAYS NEW DR WHO

THE NEW Dr Who has a battle on his hands to save the Tardis.

He was rather taken aback yesterday when the BBC suggested his police box time-travelling machine is out of date and should be replaced after 20 years' interplanetary duty,

'It's a crying shame,' said actor Colin Baker, the sixth Dr Who. 'We ought to have a campaign to save the police box.'

But John Nathan-Turner, producer of the long-running science fiction saga, believes the Time Lord is lagging behind the times.

'We are considering replacing the Tardis,' he said yesterday. 'A whole generation of young Dr Who fans have never seen a genuine police box because there are none left.'

The Tardis has a chameleon circuit so it can blend in with any surroundings.

Baker, 40, who takes over from the current Doctor — actor Peter Davison—in March, revealed that he will have a new travelling companion — a space-age cat.

And the former star of BBC's The Brothers promised a 'more alien' Dr Who with an appalling sense of dress.

He will travel the universe In a multi-coloured patchwork outfit with green and red shoes.

The idea for the costume came from Mr Nathan-Turner. He asked the BBC's costume department to design a multi-coloured outfit in bad taste. 'I think we've achieved it,' he said. 'I think the outfit for the new doctor is totally tasteless.'
