BEAM me up Scottie, the fun is about to begin — and don't forget the Tardis. For Coventry is about to be invaded by hundreds of Star Trek and Dr Who fans.

The two cult programmes, with millions of viewers world-wide, have spawned hoards of dedicated supporters.

They boldly go where no man has gone before, beyond the realms of normality into the world of Alien Priests, Atlantean Fish People and men with pointy ears.

There will be strange goings on at the Novotel on the outskirts of the city from October 4 to October 6 when 100 people will be causing a stir in their Captain Kirk suits.

Women wanting to mother the cold-blooded Vulcan Spock will be communicating with their male colleagues through crackly transmitters.

Arguments will rage about the merits of old versus new.

Many of the die-hards can't come to terms with the revamped New Generation Star Trek format.

And later in the month, in the centre of Coventry 500 Dr Who fans will be dashing around the Hotel Leofric looking for the Tardis which is rumoured to be a lot bigger than it looks.

Dr Who himself, John Pertwee, will materialise at some stage in the proceedings. And his latter-day counterpart Sylvester McCoy will be joining in the fun.

Interviews

Dr Who's best friend K9 will be there to ward off the Daleks as they trundle through the hotel corridors in the dead of night muttering "Exterminate, exterminate."

It shouldn't worry the good doctor, if one heart fails he has another to fall back on.

Interviews with the stars and producers of the show, auctions of memorabilia and props from the beloved programme, should make the weekend a great success.

Videos of shows old and new will be playing into the early hours of Sunday morning and fans will pit their wits against the doctors themselves in a series of quizzes.

Organiser Andrew Beech said: "We're not really a bunch of lunatics, we just think the programme is great entertainment."

The Dr Who convention, on October 20 and 21, is the tenth of its kind but the first one to visit Coventry.
