STEVEN Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment is in discussions with BBC Television and Universal Pictures on a project to remake the cult British TVA sci-fi series "Dr. Who," a BBC spokeswoman said.

Roughly 700 episodes of "Dr. Who" were made from 1963-89. In all, seven actors took the role of t the eccentric scientist whose time 1 machine was concealed in a blue police telephone box of now-obsolete design.

All the episodes, but especially the early ones, were notable for special effects that would be considered laughable by Hollywood standards - but this was part of their charm.

The series was as popular with adults as with children, and worldwide fan clubs have sprung up to keep the tradition alive. Among the most remembered "monsters" created for the "Dr. Who" series were the Daleks, a I race of pepperpot-shaped robots that spoke in a voice that has since been unkindly compared with that of the present BBC director general.
