Doctor Who

745pm BBC1

DRAMA Last time, Clara, Ira Missy and the Tardis all underwent "maximum extermination" on the order of the Dalek Supreme, while the Doctor was ensconced with Davros both on his dying day and, in a quirk of fate, at a crucial event in the Dalek creator's boyhood (lovely work from young Joey Price). Could the Time Lord really kill that child?

The Witch's Familiar is an even darker episode with unusually protracted dialogues, but don't be deterred; these play to the strengths of Peter Capaldi, a magnificent leading man, and Julian Bleach, who conveys surprising emotion (and, as ever, evil ingenuity) behind the mask of the ancient Davros. We see both as never before.

Lead writer Steven Moffat has studied these characters for decades and ensures rewarding pay-offs as the Time Lord's predilection for mercy and compassion comes into play. [[A master villain|See p36]]

SURROUNDED

When push comes to plunge, the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) will outwit the Daleks... won't he?
