BBC publicity bosses have succeeded where brigades of Daleks, Cybermen and assorted sci-fi creatures have failed they're exterminating Blackpool's very own "Dr Who"!

The Beeb has decided to call time on the time traveller and his seafront exhibition.

And that's bound to spell disappointment for the estimated 250,000 enthusiasts who head for the programme exhibition and familiar blue Tardis opposite Central Pier each summer.

The display, organised by BBC Enterprises Ltd. first landed in the resort in 1974 and gave "Dr Who" addicts a chance to. see firsthand the machines, costumes and special effects which make the series a family favourite.

Publicity officer Mr Ian Duncan explained. "We are always on the lookout for opportunities for promoting 'Dr Who'. It has certainly been very successful. We think the time has come to look at some fresh ideas."

Mr Duncan said a number of other promotions were being considered but they would probably not involve Blackpool.

What about the exhibits? "They will probably be used elsewhere in different contexts. I don't think they will be junked. There is a considerable amount of interest," he added.
