GIRL power of the intergalactic kind came to a Bournemouth park when Doctor Who faced old enemies the evil Cybermen.

But the much-loved Doctor is no longer a quirky man.

Gone are his long scarves, and eccentric dialogue - the new Doctor is a 36-year-old woman, played by theatre actress Deborah Blake.

Film students from the town's Arts Institute have managed to pull off a starry coup by persuading the BBC to let them make a pilot film about the legendary Timelord.

But even with the galaxy-hopping runabout the TARDIS, the Doctor and her film crew have opted to create her latest adventure at various locations here on Planet Earth, in and around Bournemouth and Poole.

The thoroughly-modern lady Doctor not only takes on the metal menace of the Cybermen, but a new strain of the Millennium Bug threatening the future of the planet.	The new Doctor Who, Deborah Blake, said: "One of my companions, Dr Ashley Simmons, is my love interest.
The new Doctor Who, Deborah Blake, said: "One of my companions, Dr Ashley Simmons, is my love interest.

"And as for being a lady Timelord, I think it's about time we women had a go at saving the Earth. It was one of the things that appealed to me about the part."

Film students at the highly respected arts college, formerly called Bournemouth & Poole College of Art and Design, approached the BBC and asked permission to make a short trailer. Once the film is finished, the student team hope to return to the BBC to see if they will be allowed to make three more episodes.

The pilot is being filmed on a shoestring budget of only a couple of thousand pounds.
