Former Dr Who Jon Pertwee is convinced the new £3.3 million film version starring Paul McGann will be a big hit - and a springboard to more TV action for past Timelords.

He believes that on the strength of the film the BBC will summon him from the mists of time along with other surviving doctors to make X Files-style TV specials. Pertwee, 76, says he would love to star in Dr Who again - alongside new Timelord McGann.

McGann makes his debut as the eighth doctor in the part BBC-financed film set in San Francisco on New Year's Eve 1999. The 90-minute made-for-TV film, titled Dr Who, will be released on video on May 15 followed by transmission on BBC 1 soon afterwards.

Pertwee, who played the third doctor in the long-running series, said: "Properly handled there is enormous life left in the programme.

"I'm looking forward to the film very much because if it is successful they will do more and then I'm hoping we will be invited to join the team, like we did in the old [[broadwcast:The Five Doctors|five doctors]] episodes.

"I would love to go back as an old doctor, absolutely.

"My advice to Paul would be: 'play it burningly sincerely. You've got to play straight down the middle, you can't send it up because if you do it won't work. "He's a damn good actor and a good looking man. He should be home and dry," said the actor who played the doctor from 1970-74.

A spokesman for the film said: "If it goes down tremendously well there are plans to turn it into a series which could

be broadcast on TV and sold on video.

"They could give it the X Files treatment as an extended programme series for TV."

The Specialist star Eric Roberts (brother of Julia) plays the villainous Master.
