A minister attacked the "torture shown on the BBC TV programme Dr Who and the 'complete disregard" for law and order on ITV's The Professionals. The Rev. Graham Moneith, from Berwick, told the General Assembly that there was a grave danger that society. through Dr Who was teaching the future generations how to torture individuals.

He said: "If you watch that programme and others like it. the number of occasions on which you see torture is disturbing." He said he felt the Church was clouding the real issue by concentrating on sex, obscenity and swearing when they ought to be thinking of human rights.

Mr. Monteith was speaking during a debate on broadcasting. The Assembly agreed that the Church and Nation Committee should maintain communication with BBC and IBA on general principles and standards, and said that on the matter of specific programmes individual approach either in approval or disapproval had the more far reaching effect. The Commissioners also viewed with regret the continued presentation in various forms of the mass media of lifestyle norm which might adversely influence young people.
