The entrance to the meeting place of the Dundee local group of the Dr Who Appreciation Society is guarded by a shaggy, collie-type K-9, writes our space reporter.

Once it had processed my identity card and realised that I was a friendly alien it took me to meet its leader, John Harding.

As John led me through to meet the leaders of other societies, who had gathered for the convention, I surreptitiously glanced round for a Tardis. With none in immediate view, I guessed that on a mission such as this, travel would be by earthman's means, and the conventional-looking cars and bicycles parked outside the window confirmed my thoughts.

John (16), who doubles as a schoolboy when he is not a society leader, explained that this was just a routine meeting.

With Daleks momentarily banished to another planet and the war of the worlds not scheduled until late autumn of this year, the members of the group confided to me that they hold meetings such as the one yesterday, about every two months.

The meeting place, I am allowed to reveal, is in the home of John's earth-mum, at 77 Turnberry Avenue, Ardler, Dundee.

There members keep up with the latest news from similar pockets of fans scattered throughout the world with an intelligence system which would impress the master himself.

They also show films of past victories in inter-galactic battles, and listen to tapes detailing former glories.

Society members had travelled to the meeting from the distant worlds of Crieff and Kennoway and the visitor from Kennoway, who gave his name as Jim Patterson, was to deliver a talk to the rest of the delegates.

For his subject, Jim chose the down-to-earth topic of "Coverage by 'Radio Times' of Doctor Who."

The group's next big event will be a meeting with colleagues from Edinburgh, when they will arrange a visit to Blackpool to see the Dr Who exhibition, and the Blackpool illuminations, part of which are given over to Dr Who.
